Get it … Fully Buffered DIMM - Wikipedia Fully Buffered DIMM (or FB-DIMM) is a memory technology that can be used to increase reliability and density of memory systems.Conventionally, data lines from the memory controller have to be connected to data lines in every DRAM module, i.e. via multidrop buses. As the memory width increases together with the access speed, the signal degrades at the interface between the bus and the device. How to tell if memory is registered or unbuffered

I'm looking to add more RAM to my laptop for gaming, video editing, and engineering software (CAD, Programming, etc). I currently have a dell G7: i7, 8gb RAM, 1060 6gb max-q. My laptop has 2 RAM slots. i know my RAM is 2666MHz and that it came with 2x4GB sticks, but it doesnt say if they're buffered or unbuffered sticks. Unbuffered output has nothing to do with ensuring your data reaches the disk; that functionality is provided by flush(), and works on both buffered and unbuffered streams. Unbuffered IO writes don't guarantee the data has reached the physical disk -- the OS file system is free to hold on to a copy of your data indefinitely, never writing it to Unbuffered is for most pc's, buffered is for servers. Since Optiplex's are not servers then you need unbuffered ram. share | improve this answer | follow |

Now, I don't know the exact definition / coding of buffered vs. unbuffered, but since many major-brand RAM manufacturers say that the "R" suffix means "Registered", and you say that Registered == Buffered (which makes sense as there is an intermediary register through which the DRAM access has to go to and which performs additional ECC checks).
